A jazz celebration in memory of Alan Crumpton is being staged at The California Club, Foxhall Road, Ipswich, on Sunday. The Prescott Jazz Summit in Prescott, Arizona, will mark its 10th year by presenting musicians from California and Arizona during the three-day weekend of events in concert halls, theaters and outdoors. The event was conceived and is organized by m: Mike Vax , former Stan Kenton Orchestra trumpeter… When the Celebration Iowa Singers and Jazz Band, an elite group of Iowa high school musicians, perform at a fundraiser Tuesday at Iowa Central Community College’s Decker Auditorium, all proceeds will go to BLAST. Cool jazz was one of the most popular jazz styles of the 1950s. Not all of the cool jazz leaders were based in California, and not all of the jazz there during the era was cool jazz; but the music made its greatest impact and reached the height of its popularity in Los Angeles. When a folky singer-songwriter in California and an adventurous nine-piece jazz band from central Virginia set Henry David Thoreau’s poetry to music, the results were exuberant, messy and glorious.
