Nat Hentoff, a regular contributor to this column, writes below about that greatest of rarities: a safety net for jazz artists in need. Below he profiles the Jazz Foundation of America and Wendy Oxenhorn. Their efforts deserve to be far better known and more amply supported. In a series of articles in this column, Stuart Nicholson has reported on various European festivals that attract a large, young audience that few US jazz events can approach—and without watering down the jazz content, as has become almost de rigueur in the States. Next week marks the 40th anniversary of Woodstock–the festival that all but doomed whatever hope jazz had of reviving its popularity with the young masses. Hurricane Sam and the Hotshots will perform from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, July 3 as part of the city of Sausalito’s concert series, Jazz & Blues by the Bay. Josh Rzepka doesn’t discriminate when it comes to classical and jazz. The Akron-born trumpeter plays both, and he’s in the midst of recording compact discs in each genre. This column preceding Independence Day kicks off with two more MVD CDs in their great series of essential jazz albums, then touches base with a local band’s debut album before wrapping up with a DVD chronicling the 6,000th concert from All-American guitar hero Ted Nugent. |
