MONTREAL - THE Montreal international jazz festival on Tuesday announced its lineup for the June 25-July 6 event that includes jazz luminaries Sonny Rollins, Bobby McFerrin, Ahmad Jamal and Herbie Hancock. Lionel Richie and Cassandra Wilson will kick off the festival with an opening gala concert on June 25.

Jazz legend Herbie Hancock will be feted at a belated 70th birthday bash at Carnegie Hall that will highlight the revival of a major summer jazz festival in the Big Apple.

Back in the 1960s and ’70s, Larry Coryell, left, was one of the guitar gods. His jazz-rock fusion was right up there with Miles Davis, Weather Report, Herbie Hancock and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. The Eleventh House was Coryell’s pioneering band, and he sat in with all the jazz greats, from flutist Herbie Mann to guitarist John McLaughlin.

Sonya Kitchell, The Slip On Mountain Stage

Kitchell is a singer-songwriter seasoned beyond her years, having previously joined Herbie Hancock on a worldwide tour. For her appearance in Charleston, W.Va., she brought along the Boston-based indie-rockers in The Slip, who appeared on Mountain Stage in 2006. Together, they promote Kitchell’s latest album, This Storm .
