I spent June 25 through 28 there, wandering the streets to take in some of the free shows, but I also caught a handful of indoor shows, as well The 31st Montreal international jazz festival opened its stages to hip hop this year, as organizers insisted the urban beats form an integral part of jazz — despite what purists may say. A while ago, there was talk in the jazz Twitterverse about the supposed superiority of the Montreal-style bagel. We went to Montreal to investigate the phenomenon, and draw some unwarranted greater meanings out of the comparison. The Montreal International Jazz Festival has broken out a second Miles Davis Award this year for jazz pianist Dave Brubeck. A standing ovation is a pretty great way to start a concert–and with more than 50 years of songwriting and recording to his credit, Allen Toussaint deserves nothing less. The 31st edition, with more than 700 concerts over 12 days, ends on Tuesday with a festival first: a Mardi Gras parade through the city, complete with floats from New Orleans and music by Trombone Shorty and Allen Toussaint…
